Comedian-magician claims Fox's cartoon stole his act for use in the Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.

Though it would initially appear impossible, apparently Jesus Christ and Carlos Mencia have something in common--they both may steal material from others...at least according to Family Guy.

In the direct-to-DVD feature Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, Fox's Family Guy portrayed the sandaled one as having abilities that "may have been exaggerated a bit." In one scene, Jesus is shown doing a goofy routine involving hand gestures and singing a simple tune.

While that may just be enough to send the deeply religious into a conniption fit, it was certainly more than enough for one magician to file a lawsuit. Art Metrano, who works as a comedian, actor, and magician, has sued 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane (whose name is misspelled on legal documents (pdf file) acquired by TMZ.com), and collaborators Steve Callaghan and Alex Borstein.

Metrano claims that the act that the animated Jesus performed was in fact his own that he has done before on shows such as The Tonight Show. The comedian is suing for copyright infringement.

TMZ.com has video of both the scene in question and a performance by Metrano from way back when. Though the video evidence seems to be damning, the real question is if Metrano's act is legally protected in any way.

Metrano has an extensive acting portfolio, and has appeared in shows such as Benson, Police Academy: The Series, L.A. Law, and Party of Five.

Family Guy, which has always been controversial because of its off-the-cuff humor, has been sued twice already this year. Carol Burnett brought charges against the show in March for the show's use of one of her characters, and a music publishing company sued the show for the its parody of "When You Wish Upon a Star" that contained anti-Semitic lyrics.

Not a year goes by when Family Guy isn't sued for stealing from someone. Since Carol Burnett sued for the parody of her show over half a year ago (see neoportal article), there has been little issues with Family Guy until recently.

In a recent Family Guy story ark, Stewie, the baby, talks about going back in time to see whether or not Jesus could perform miracles, which then cut to Jesus performing really simply magic tricks. Art Metrano, also known as "The Amazing Metrano", claims that this act was his from when he performed it several decades ago.

From this, he has decided to sue for 2 million dollars, claiming copyright infringement, amongst others things. Representatives have not responded at this time.

"We are surprised that Ms Burnett, who has made a career of spoofing others on television, would go so far as to sue Family Guy for a simple bit of comedy."

So said a 20th Century Fox, the producer of Family Guy, spokesperson when asked about the issue.

Carol Burnett, star of the hit show The Carol Burnett Show which ran through the sixties and seventies, is now suing Family Guy for amounts totaling 2 million dollars after the creators of Family Guy created what is believed to be a comedic representation of her character, with a modified version of her music playing in the background. She maintains that the use of her character disparages her publicity rights.

She also maintains that, after she rejected allowing them to use her show directly, they edited the script to make fun of her ear tug ending for her show.

Very few portals get the same treat as having one of the excellent reviews done by Vito Raliffe to hit the site, and luckily, we are one of the first to get a chance at them. As his seventh review on games, Family Guy for the Xbox was given a 6.2 out of 10 as Vito's final verdict, the game losing marks when it came to lasting appeal, difficulty and the overall length of the game. His ending comments recommend that only if you are a fan of the game, that you should go, find it, rent it, play it once through and leave it well enough alone for as long as it lasts in your possession afterwards.

The entire review is here, with a small snippet below:

Anyone who is into basic beat-em-ups, and still enjoys arcade games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Captain America and the Avengers, can appreciate the old school simplicity of Peter’s adventure. You have a few different attacks, fight swarms of enemies, pick up objects and use them as weapons, gain power-ups to unleash special attacks, and even have a big green arrow telling you to “Go” to the next screen once you have defeated all of the necessary enemies. Feel nostalgic yet? If you are not into beat-em-ups at all and find them to become quickly repetitive, then playing as Peter will bore you in no time. If you can appreciate the basic gameplay and used to spend dozens of quarters a day at your local arcade or laundry mat on these types of games, then you will probably enjoy playing as Peter quite a bit, even if it just to remind you of the “good ‘ole days“.

We highly recommend you read it! If you find it useful, please click this link. Enjoy the Neoportal Feature, and thank you for coming to the Family Guy Neoportal for news and updates on the series!

PLATFORMS: Family Guy [PC, Xbox, PS2, GC, PSP]

Over the past few weeks, neoportal staff have been reporting dismal review after another for the recently released Family Guy games, proving, once again, that like series such as The Simpsons and Futurama, that games based off these genres neither have the staying power nor the content to be able to make the game.

While reviews continue to be made about the overall badly done Family Guy game, here's a quick at a glance series of problems that both reviews and just simple joes playing the game had problems with, and a few bits that they liked:

  • There were three types of gameplay within the game, yet all three were poorly done. Not only did they miss key elements which other games themselves had, but they seemed unfinished, with absolutely no difficulty in doing to most simplistic of tasks.
  • Characters moved a lot more slowly then how they do in the show, taking away a lot of the feel that the show gives it when Stewie gets into an argument with his Teddy bear or when Brian moves his eyes at Peter getting drunk. This does not mean that the fans did not like how the game looked, but many did not like the small details and visual gags disappearing for a moment which makes Family Guy, Family Guy. Indeed, many people complained that it looked like something out of South Park, as did the original Simpsons game and the Futurama game.
  • The game tends to have a recycled premise. Gags, plots, even gameplay are all taken from the show, with little new being added for what could have been a successful game.
  • The game still has that sense of humour which has made it a world wide hit with fans today.
  • There is almost no lasting value with the game. Being highly repetitive, there is little to no point in replaying something that took many people only six hours (and some less!) to finish.

So, in the end, do the people recommend the game? If you are not a Family Guy fan, leave it on the shelf, and if you are... leave it on the shelf. In about twenty reviews that have come off the net, only three recommended that die-hard fans get it. For the rest of us, it's better to forget that the game ever existed.

A Family Guy producer gave 100 people an inside look into the creation of the Family Guy shows which grace screens across the world at the Rutgers Student Center on the College Avenue campus.

While there, Mike Henry, supervising producer, gave us some information on the upcoming season, including a drama called "Lois Kills Stewie", and an hour long special parody of "Star Wars: A New Hope". Also, Peter will finally become patriotic to his country, only to find out soon after that he is Mexican.

Along with that, Henry also speaks about how he got into the industry, and his short spurt in the advertisement industry.

"Our attitude toward the show is simply to be as funny as we can," Henry said.

    Nov 25 2006 - Family Guy Review
Another review has been put up for Family Guy, and once again, the reviewer beats down on the game, considering the game so out of date that he would have expected to see it on the NES system.

According to the article, the graphics are bad, the gameplay is outdated, and originality was no considered when it came down to making the game. Overall, they have rated the game so poorly, that they recommend you forget that the game never existed, like many of the other Comedy-turned-video-games to have come out in recent years.

    A small snippet below:

In fact, Family Guy could have just as easily been made back on the NES, given the outrageously primitive gameplay. The gameplay is split into three sections – you play as Stewie, Brian and Peter throughout different segments, and the gameplay styles are vastly and deliberately different. Stewie plays as a platformer/shooter, Brian plays stealth levels and Peter plays in a side-scrolling beat-em-up fashion. This wouldn’t be so bad if each style was done well, but they are probably the most basic one could ever imagine the genres to be. Brian’s levels are particularly lousy. Frustrating, tedious stealth levels have you hiding behind tables and creeping down hallways, avoiding the eyes of carbon copy enemies. The police officers sitting at tables have a few animations – look around, write on some paper and drink some coffee. Here’s a hint: walk past the table when he isn’t looking around. It’s insultingly monotonous and uninspired gameplay that can literally be represented the exact same way using some red blocks for tables and green dots for police officers. Wait, was that NES? Perhaps Atari 2600 instead.

Whilst die hard fans of the series might not think so, CNN certainly thinks that is the case with the game. The game seems to take the humour and style from the tv show and merge it brilliantly into the game, however the main part of the game - the gameplay - is slightly lacking, and in CNN's words:

The problem with Family Guy is that none of the three game styles is executed exceptionally well.

While it's an average game, Family Guy is worth the ride for fans of the TV show, but others should avoid this title like Peter avoids hard work and quality family time.

The folks over at IGN got the chance to speak, exclusively, with Mike Henry, one of the many actors from the Family Guy series. He speaks briefly about the series and the chance that he might be parodied on the show, in a two page interview with IGN Editor Eric Goldman.

IGN TV: The show is known in part for the many pop culture references. How do those come about? Do you write a scene, and then you think, "It would be funny if this happened…" or again, are you guys talking on your own about something you remember and it makes it into the show?

Henry: Well a lot of times, it's whatever the script needs. If we need a TV gag, like if the family's watching TV, and we need a big pop or big laugh to get through a scene that's going to get out a lot of story stuff, we'll send off a team of four writers. They'll sit in a room and come up with different ideas. It's as simple as that. "We need a TV gag!" So we'll go, "S**t, we've done M*A*S*H, we've done every other show…" So then we just kind of make up shows. We've got a wide age range. I think our youngest writer is 27 or 28, and our oldest writer is mid-'50s, so that's a lot of coverage as far as pop culture. For some reason, Seth loves 1920s, '30s '40s, '50s… Loves that stuff. So we're just having a good time remembering stuff.

The folks over at the South Bend Tribune recently released an article with their thoughts on the game, which found the game not to be up to the standards they had expected. While they thought the game had much of the feel of the show, they found the levels repeatedly boring, or painful in display, with bad controls and even worse site gags.

Graphically, the game perfectly captures the look and feel of the animated show, and the voice work is done by the same people from the show, including "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane.

But there's just not enough variety or originality to make the interspersed comedic nuggets worth mining.

"What the Deuce Are You Staring At!?! A Collection of Interpretive Work"

That, folks, is the title of the new Art Studio started up for Family Guy. The hit TV series has moved over to the art industry, with 21 pieces of art being shown, November the eighth, showcasing work based off of the Family Guy series.

The exhibit was created by 20th Century Fox Television's Licensing & Merchandising department, and is beginning it's tour at Beverly Hills, Calif., Museum of TV & Radio, moving onto other international cities such as Toronto and Melbourne.

"It's a testament to the genius of Seth MacFarlane's creation that Family Guy has proven to be much more than a television show; it's a full-fledged cultural phenomenon," said the presidents of Twentieth Century Fox, Gary Newman and Dana Walden. "[The Fox Licensing & Merchandising Team] had the brilliant idea to challenge artists to riff on the show, and their love for Seth's characters really shines through in these provocative pieces. We're very proud of the results."

Destructoid recently put up an preview on the soon-to-be released Family Guy game, speaking shortly and frankly about what the expect from each character after the writer gets the chance to see a preview at 2K games. As they say, the bottom line "An 'M' rated LEGO Star Wars with Family Guy animation and humor."

Along the way, you’ll see some prisoners giving each other backrubs and chasing that sweet prison ass around the showers. Funny stuff, I’m tellin’ ya.

    *snip*

The game actually look fun and keeps a lot of that strange humor and fast cut away scenes (done with WarioWare-like mini-games) that you’d expect in something coming from the Family Guy.

GotFrag put up an article yesterday on the upcoming Family Guy game, speaking about what we can expect from the game, and what we will be doing in it, from smacking around old people and children as Peter, to using high-tech gadgets made by Stewie to take over the world faster than his brother. Yes, that's right, the rumours are true, the miniture Stewie will be coming back to face off against his brother in world domination!

Meanwhile, as Brian, you will be collecting evidence to prove that he didn't get the prize-winning dog names Seabreeze pregnant, and Peter will be trying to stop Mr. Belvedere is out to take over the world after taking a nasty head injury.

The game will be following the same kind of humour as the show, giving you a 20 hour episode of gaming instead of the half hour you usually get in front of the TV. All we can really hope for is that this game does not have the same problems that burst out from The Simpson's and Futurama making the move to the game world.

Tvsquad and the Arizona Daily Star both recently posted up articles on the Mother Tucker episode recently shown, both with reviews mentioned that the episode involving Stewie's and Brian's own talk show to be dull or boring. The quotes below.

    From the Arizona Daily Star:

The riffs on all the intros played on the radio was funny at first, but just lame, lame, LAME! the next five times. And then there was the whole deal with Peter’s mom (Phyllis Diller) romancing Tom Tucker, the local news guy. Turns out Peter’s real dad wasn’t that nice, but Tom Tucker’s turning out to be a better father, and Peter instantly reverts to a 300-pound man-child who gets pushed on the swing, gets his scrapes kissed by Mommy and overdoses on sugar. But I bet the real Peter would have the same happen to him. The bit about Tom Tucker still talking like he’s on the newscast was a nice one, but it was the only one in a show that is starting to show some weakness.

    From TVsquad:

And we're back, with what was, at best, an ok episode. Was it just me or did it seem like a lot of the cut away gags just didn't work this week?

Not a great episode. The whole Peter story just didn't do much for me. As usual, the Stewie and Brian stuff was the best part of the episode. Slow start to the season, but there are 20 more episodes to get it right.

Not one, not two, but ALL of the Family Guy cast will be reprising their role in the Family Guy game lending their voice to the characters that they play.
As he does on television, series creator Seth MacFarlane will provide voices for the portly patriarch Peter Griffin, his megalomaniacal son Stewie, and Brian, the family dog. While that covers the game's three playable characters, the rest of the Family Guy cast will fill out the game's supporting cast. Adam West will portray himself as the insane mayor of Quahog, Seth Green plays Chris Griffin, Mila Kunis is Meg Griffin, and Alex Borstein once again provides a voice for Lois Griffin.

A few classmates from Sandusky High School have started a trend amongst their classmates, when they found a Stewie doll in a parking lot and decided to use it as a prank. However, instead of the doll ever becoming part of something diabolical like it was originally intended to (like it's namesake, Stewie Griffin), it's become more of a year related things for the seniors going to that school.

Originally planning just to leave him on some porch to get signed, the three students came up with the idea of "Pass the Stewie", where the diminutive character is passed around to all the students in the year. When a student finds it on their doorstep, they are supposed to sign it and drop it off at another school member's doorstep.

At the end of the year, the school will hold a raffle to see who gets the now famous Stewie doll, out of the 300 seniors residing in the area.

Bill Johnson, pro-family activist and president of ADA, the American Decency Association, has made a call out to the people of America to stop watching Family Guy.

Johnson claims that the show elevates the spread of "sexual propaganda", when the show explored the creation of graphic novels, sexual innuendo, and several inappropriate fantasies involving harm to woman. Following that up, Bill Johnson also believes that this is just one example of the vulgarity present in typical programming in the time slot.

Yum Brands is also a target of Johnson's, as subsidiaries such as Taco Bell, as they are sponsored by Family Guy. He urges all parents and other responsible members of the community to boycott these products.

"You know, you just grieve on so many different levels because you also know that there are many, many families that are watching this that just are so undiscerning, aren't grounded," he laments. "And it's just becoming increasingly acceptable, this sort of so-called 'entertainment.'"

2K Games is in the process of creating a video game for the favorite animated cartoon Family Guy. Previous cartoons made into video games include The Simpsons and South Park. The creator of the series, Seth MacFarlane will be helping to create the game. The official description is:

Developed by High Voltage Software, Family Guy will feature the offbeat humor from the show's writers in an action/adventure style of gameplay, focusing on the lovable oaf Peter Griffin, his world domination-obsessed son Stewie and their talking, martini-drinking dog, Brian. Throughout the game, these popular characters wreak havoc in many of the same locations depicted in the animated series

The game is expected to be released some time this year.

What cartoon show is better is no longer just discussed on the internet. The Simpsons and Family Guy are taking the feud one step further. Many recent episodes have included gags aimed at the cartoon shows that air on the same network on the same night.

In The Italian Bob, a book if Italian Criminals insinuates that Family Guy and American Dad are plagarists of The Simpsons. In a recent episode of Family Guy, Stewie is shown running Homer over with his Big Wheel similiar to the way Marge's car does in the series famous opening.

Mike Barker, executive producer of American Dad says that there are some things are said at parties, but the rivarly is very nerd-like. Family Guy says they have put more Simpsons gags in their more recent episodes. The war will wage on.

In The Perfect Castaway, Peter goes on a fishing trip with his friends and they end up on a deserted island. According to The Advocate Magine, a scene in The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire, which first aired on June 12th, 2005, has offended many AIDS groups. In the scene, Peter tells Cleveland that is wife Loretta cheated on him because he has a great talent of breaking bad news to people.

As usual, the scene then flashbacked to Peter with 3 others singing a song about AIDS like a Barbershop Quartet to a young man (who has the stereotypical "gay" goatee).

    The lyrics are:

    Peter: You have AIDS.
    Quartet: Yes, you have AIDS.
Peter: I hate to tell you, boy, you have AIDS.
    Quartet: You got the AIDS.
Peter: You may have caught it when you stuck that filthy needle in here.
Quartet: Or maybe all that unprotected sex which we hear.
    Peter: It isn’t clear
Quartet But what we’re certain of is that you have AIDS.
Peter:Yes, you have AIDS. Not HIV
    Quartet: But full-blown AIDS.
Be sure that you see that this is not HIV, but full blown AIDS.
    Not HIV, but full-blown AIDS.
Barbershop Quarter Man: I’m sorry, I wish it was something less serious
Quartet: But it’s AIDS. You’ve got the AIDS.

The FOX Television Network said that viewers of Family Guy should expect the shocking and sometimes "tasteless" humor. They argued that the point was to show how bad Peter was at breaking news to people, not to make fun or offend anyone with the horrible disease.

Fox spokesman Steven Melnick said, "Over the years, Family Guy has skewered virtually every ethnic, religious, and social group. The audience that tunes into this series is well-aware of what to expect from the show: a subversive and sometimes shocking comedic view that occasionally skirts the borders of appropriateness. This scene is not a joke about HIV but rather Peter’s ignorance and inability to convey bad news. Given the nature of this series as well as the well-established cluelessness of this particular character, the scene, while certainly abrasive, is not beyond the expectation of the Family Guy audience."

Craig E. Thompson, the executive director of an AIDS project in Los Angeles said that the scene should be "socially unacceptable" to watch. He said that the scene was just as funny as singing about someone with cancer. He also said that the scene disgraces AIDS and "reinforces homiphoiba."

Gene Copello, an AIDS Institute Director said that Family Guy acted irresponsibly by airing the scene. He said FOX should make an immediate apology to all the people living with HIV or AIDS. "There is nothing comical about a person lying in a hospital bed dying of AIDS or any other disease."

As we all know, Family Guy didn't have the best ratings. Plus the fact that the show was outrageous in many ways didn't help it either. So thus, during the third season, Family Guy was cancelled for good (according to Fox) and fans cried at this. Despite the thousands of e-mails sent to Fox demanding it to be back on the air and the peition (which has now reached 100,000), Fox stayed tall and keep the show buried.

It was in 2003 the show had reruns on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim late night television. It was a bang, beating out The Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on many occasions. To top that off, DVD sales hit 2.2 million in the first year and is still growing to this day, a feat that few have done.

Due to the extreme amount of success, Fox decided to do the unpredictable and bring back the show. Yet again this was a feat that few shows have copied.

The first episode of season 4 of Family Guy aired on Fox and did damage. With 11.9 million views tuning in to see Family Guy's comeback, hitting at #25. Along with the huge ratings, Family Guy has been nominated for an Emmy and has a direct-to-DVD movie coming out soon aswell.

Family Guy is back and you can't stop it.
